Imam Nawawi’s 40 Hadith (Part 1) & Manners & Etiquette of the Student

In this course, students will study the 42 ḥadīth from Imām Al-Nawawī’s collection ‘Forty Ḥadīth of Imām Al-Nawawī which represents one of the most cherished and loved shorter collections of prophetic narrations. The Forty ḥadīth of Imām al-Nawawī has always been considered an essential text for every student of knowledge as the understanding of these ḥadīth is fundamental to the belief and practice of a Muslim.

“Everyone who desires and looks forward to the Hereafter must be familiar with these ḥadīth because they cover the most important aspects of the religion and they offer direction to all forms of obedience to Allāh. This is clear to anyone who ponders these ḥadīth.” – Al-Nawawī’s introduction to his Forty Ḥadīth.

Manners & Etiquette of the Student

The seeking of knowledge is one of the most virtuous deeds one can perform, as the student attempts to learn about that which brings him closer to Allah (swt). However, the islamic tradition has also placed great emphasis on how one approaches the acquisition of knowledge, namely the need to perfect adab (manners) with Allah and his creation.

It was once said by a great scholar of hadith “Verily, we are more in need of a small amount of good manners then we are in an abundance of knowledge”.

This course will attempt to introduce the student to the nature of Adab and the approach to studying, primarily as a student of the Islamic sciences, but also one’s relationship with Allah, one’s parents, relatives and teachers.
