Disaster Recovery and Resilience

My son had a school picture the next day, but really, really needed a haircut✂️

By time I get home, the barbers nearby had shut.

I decide to do a DIY job and put my new hair clippers to good use against the advice of my wife.

I didn’t know the clipper settings don’t match real barber tools (the #3 on my clippers was actually very short).

It makes a deep trim on the side of his head which was NOT the plan!

I fumble around for a while with scissors to try and fix it and make his hair considerably worse.

My son is quite resilient, though a little concerned. My wife is at a loss for words (thankfully!).

I go into ‘contingency plan’ mode and make a swift decision to take him to a barbers further away at 8pm.

I tell my child on the way not to stress and explain when plan A doesn’t work, we go to plan B. When plan B, doesn’t work we go into plan C. That’s life.

The barber does a fantastic cut and my son is extremely happy (he liked it better than previous times).

On the way back I explain to him the noble art of Disaster recovery – he listened intently and it’s like I saw light bulb go off in his mind.

Such a trivial issue, but him going physically through it embedded within him a solid lesson.

I can think of a number of learnings from this story alone.

But one thing which stands out is to go to a professional when something important needs doing!
